(lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of the first edition jacket; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [spine a bit turned, light external wear and mild soiling, slight fading to cloth along bottom edge of front cover, one-time owner's signature on front endpaper]. (B&W photographs) Weegee the Famous's first and most famous book, which grew out of the attention that New York's Museum of Modern Art began to give to the photographer's work in 1943 (when four of his prints were featured in a late-summer exhibition called "Action Photography") and early 1944 (he gave a talk on "Realism in Photography" at the Museum in early April, and five more of his photos were included in a related exhbition); these were among the earliest significant steps on his ascent from tabloid bloodhound to photographic artist. According to biographer Christopher Bonanos, Weegee assembled a dummy version of the book, which he shopped around to various publishers but for about six months before finally making a deal with Duell, Sloan & Pearce to issue the book under their Essential Books imprint. The book was an immediate hit, and although the reviews were somewhat mixed, the surrounding its publication went a long way to making the photographer's self-ascribed moniker "Weegee the Famous" into a reality. Not only did it give Weegee's reputation as a serious photographic a huge boost, but it also injected "the Naked City" into the American lexicon as a kind of shorthand for the seedy side of New York City -- an association that was only enhanced by the 1948 movie THE NAKED CITY (inspired by the book but actually using only its title, rights to which were acquired by producer Mark Hellinger) and the 1958-1963 TV series NAKED CITY. (According to Wikipedia, Weegee was hired as a "visual consultant" on the 1948 film, which was shot on location in NYC, but the AFI Catalog states that he was the film's "official still photographer"; neither is quite true. Per Bonnano, Hellinger put him on the payroll for $100 a week as a "technical adviser" (a more prosaic and even more nebulous job title than "visual consultant") whose "main job was to take still pictures on the set" (which would not have made him the film's "official still photographer," an important and highly specialized task that no doubt would have been covered by a film-industry professional). Whatever he actually did, it was uncredited -- although he does, however, appear in the film, in a fleeting cameo as -- what else? -- a news photographer.) NOTE that what denotes this copy as a third printing are: (1) the tan cloth cover is only very slightly textured (notably less so than the first printing); (2) the book has photographic endpapers (identical to those in the front, but which are not present in the first printing); and (3) it bears the Duell, Sloan and Pearce imprint on the spine, just beneath that of Essential Books. (The first two printings have only the Essential Books imprint on the spine.) Also NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.…

Store description
Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. (A sturdy box or an unbendable package is always involved.) **** That's all there is to ReadInk: just a guy who has loved books all my life (perhaps to excess) and entered the trade in my "middle years" to see what I could make of it. And I'm still finding out. **** To view my inventory exclusively, head over to my website -- www.readinkbooks.com. ---- Howard Prouty, prop.…
