What if the story of early Christianity is more diverse than you were ever taught?
What were the mysterious Nag Hammadi texts, and why did they disappear from mainstream history for centuries? Who was Jesus according to these ancient writings? What did early Christians believe about salvation, creation, the soul, and the nature of divine knowledge?
The Nag Hammadi Scriptures takes you deep into one of the most fascinating discoveries in the history of ancient Christianity.
Inside, you will explore:
• The remarkable discovery of the Nag Hammadi codices in Egypt and how these ancient manuscripts survived for centuries
• The historical world of Judaism, Christianity, Greek philosophy, and religious diversity in Late Antiquity
• The meaning of Gnosticism, including gnosis, spiritual awakening, divine knowledge, and the search for liberation
• The hidden teachings found throughout the Nag Hammadi writings and their ideas about reality, creation, ignorance, and salvation
• The Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Philip, Gospel of Truth, Apocryphon of John, and other important texts
• The Nag Hammadi portrayal of Jesus as teacher, revealer, and guide
• Fascinating concepts such as Sophia, the Demiurge, Aeons, Archons, the Pleroma, and the divine spark
• Alternative perspectives on resurrection, revelation, scripture, religious authority, and early Christian belief
• Why some ancient Christian writings disappeared from mainstream history and how the surviving manuscripts transformed modern scholarship
• Common misconceptions surrounding the Nag Hammadi Library and what historians can realistically establish from the evidence
Whether you are fascinated by ancient Christianity, biblical history, Gnostic traditions, lost writings, or the enduring human search for spiritual truth, this book provides an accessible introduction to the world behind these remarkable manuscripts.
