Item description from seller

VOLUME I ONLY. 8vo. 8 x 5.5 inches. Vol. I, [4] + xiv + [2] + 429 pp. Include 3 separate reproduction title pages of original edition. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board. Rough cut edges, Some pages uncut. Extremities worn and partly sunned with stain on spine. Some foxing of page edges, but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate. Illustrated by 6 pages of plates, including frontispiece, and by reproductions of title pages. Volume I only of the five volume set produced by the Oxford University Press, one of the best editions of the novels of Jane Austin ever issued. The inclusion of reproductions of the original title-pages to the first editions, together with the scholarly notes, appendices and indexes, and the carefully chosen contemporary illustrations complement the definitive text. A revised version of the 1923 Oxford edition edited by Robert William Chapman (1881-1960) scholar and editor, with unacknowledged assistance from his wife. Chapman became Secretary of the Clarendon Press and later edited the letters of Samuel Johnson. ART / LITERATURE NOVELS LIT. FICTION 19TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED ART / LITERATURE.
