Hal Leonard Student Piano Library: Notespeller Book 2 by Karen Harrington is an educational piano workbook designed to develop note reading and writing skills for early intermediate learners. Closely aligned with Piano Lessons Book 2, it supports students as they build confidence with the musical alphabet, staff notation, and essential theory concepts through structured, engaging activities.
Created for piano students working alongside lessons or independently, the book uses a story-based approach featuring characters like Spike and Party Cat to maintain motivation while reinforcing musical literacy. It is ideal for learners who are progressing beyond beginner level and need clear, guided practice in reading and understanding notation.
Presented in clear, easy-to-follow standard notation, the book includes a variety of written exercises and activities that guide students through recognising notes on the stave, identifying intervals, and understanding sharps and flats. The structured layout supports both private teaching and group instruction, while carefully graded content ensures a smooth learning curve without overwhelming the student.
What makes this book particularly effective is its balance of creativity and structured learning. By placing technical exercises within a playful narrative setting, it encourages consistent practice while helping students connect visually and conceptually with music notation. Teachers benefit from a reliable, curriculum-aligned resource, while students gain a sense of progress and achievement as they move through each activity.
Whether used in weekly lessons, independent study, or as a supportive gift for a developing pianist, this book reinforces core reading skills that form the foundation of confident playing. Its approachable style and educational depth make it a valuable addition to any early piano learning journey.
