Volumes 1-7 (of 16). Each volume approximately 750 pages each - double column. Double page color maps. Wood engraved text illustrations throughout. Uniformly bound in brown half leather over marbled boards. The spines have six compartments, two with title and volume info (gilt faded), the others with a decorative device in blind. Some slight rubbing. All edges marbled. Hardbound. Very Good. George Ripley (1802-1880) was an American social reformer, Unitarian minister, and journalist associated with Transcendentalism. He was the founder of the short-lived Utopian community Brook Farm in West Roxbury, MA. He later edited Harper's Magazine. Together with Bayard Taylor he compiled a 'Handbook of Literature and the Fine Arts' (1852). With Charles A. Dana (1819-1897), he edited the 16 volume 'The New American Cyclopaedia' (1857-1863), reissued as 'The American Cyclopaedia' (1873-1876 et. seq.). It sold in the millions. Ripley alone earned royalties of nearly $1.5 million. Examples in such nice original bindings are uncommon today. W46 SETS. Seller Inventory # 007R85
