About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Publisher: New York: Johnson, Fry & Company (1862)

Publication Date: 1862

Binding: Half Leather

Illustrator: Alonzo Chappel

Book Condition: Very Good

Nice set with honest wear to bindings but still very serviceable. Full page engraved plates of important Americans up to the time of the beginning of the Civil War (no portraits of Confederates however). Text accompanies each portrait. Sporadic age staining but most the pages, including plates, very clean. Engraved title page showing allegorical figure with eagle, shield and wreath (reminiscent of the figures painted by Brumidi in the U.S. Capital) preceding the printed title page in each volume. Frontispiece engravings both present and tissue protected. Abraham Lincoln portait included in second volume and it shows him seated with his feet resting on a torn copy of the Confederate articles of secession! Many interesting poses for the famous patriots and leading citizens of the history of the United States up to that time. The military officers sometimes posed with their cannons, etc. or on board ship in the case of the naval officers. The civilians often shown in their studies with large sized books sitting at their feet. Spine leather aged to a light brown. Five raised bands on each spine. Corners and edges with heaviest wear as typical. Outer joints worn but mostly unbroken (just starting at front top of volume 2). The books are still tight in their bindings. Fascinating gallery of some of the key players in early U.S. history. Size: Quarto, 488, 470pp. Bookseller Inventory # 1630
