FIRST EDITION. 4to. 9.5 x 11.5 inches. xii + 324 pp. Bound in original half vellum over sugar paper boards; spine recently rebacked in blue cloth with paper title label and new endpapers. Deckled edges. Extremities worn, small water stain in upper corner of frontispiece, folding map repaired and occasional foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by a portrait frontispiece, aquatint plate of Coruña, folding plan of Coruña, and large folding partially coloured map of Spain and Portugal. The first hand narrative is followed by a collection of over one hundred letters to and from the Scottish soldier, Sir John Moore (1761-1809). They were written 1808-09, during his three months in Spain and Portugal, before he fell in battle as the French attacked his withdrawing army prior to its embarkation from the port of La Coruña.
