8vo. 5.75 x 8.75 inches. xiv + 241 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt in coloured pictorial dust wrapper which has a few chips on the edges, including head and tail of spine. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. 1969 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 2 page map frontispiece and by 12 pages of black and white plates. First published by Librairie Hachette, Paris under the title La Vie Quotidienne A Sainte-Hélene au Temps de Napoleon, 1966. Gilbert Martineau (1918-95), of La Rochelle, anglophile French naval officer and author,served as French Consul on the island and resided in Longwood House as its official custodian, 1956-87.
