Item description from seller
Language: English. About The Book: The book "Mysore and Coorg from the Inscriptions" is a comprehensive exploration of Mysore and Coorg's history, utilizing inscriptions as valuable contemporary records. Major Dixon's early photographic efforts in 1865 captured 150 inscriptions, providing a basis for historical understanding. Lewis, appointed Director of Archaeological Researches in 1884, expanded the study, forming the Archaeological Department in 1890. The meticulous exploration revealed insights into ruling powers, their ancestry, and achievements, filling historical gaps. The book serves as a compendium, summarizing the Epigraphia Carnatica volumes, and is a valuable resource for scholars, shedding light on Karnataka's history, literature, and culture. About The Author: Benjamin Lewis Rice CIE (1837–1927), commonly known as B. L. Rice, was a British historian, archaeologist, and educationist. Renowned as shasanapitamaha or Purathathva Pitamaha, he gained acclaim for his groundbreaking efforts in deciphering inscriptions, particularly in Kannada and Sanskrit, within the Kingdom of Mysore. His extensive research culminated in the publication of Epigraphia Carnatica, a comprehensive compilation translating approximately 9000 inscriptions from the Old Mysore region. Rice's contributions also extended to the highly regarded Mysore Gazetteer, a vital reference for information on Mysore and its neighboring Coorg, solidifying his legacy as a distinguished figure in the Mysore civil service and the inaugural Director of the Mysore State Archaeology Department.
