A database can accept perfectly valid SQL and still produce unreliable results.
Poor table design creates duplication. Weak relationships allow conflicting records. Unsafe updates damage more rows than intended. Excessive privileges expose sensitive information. Missing indexes slow applications, while untested backups provide false confidence.
MySQL Blueprint for Beginners gives you a structured, project-based path from an empty server to a secure, application-ready relational system.
Instead of teaching isolated commands, this practical guide shows how database design, SQL, security, performance, recovery, and application access work together. Each chapter develops the continuing LocalMarket project—a catalogue and order-management system for a growing retailer.
Inside, you’ll learn how to:
- Understand tables, rows, columns, keys, relationships, schemas, clients, and servers
- Install and verify a dependable local development environment
- Create limited accounts instead of performing everyday work as an administrator
- Translate business requirements into entities, attributes, keys, and relationships
- Design clear entity-relationship models before creating tables
- Choose suitable numeric, text, date, Boolean-style, and JSON types
- Enforce required values, uniqueness, ranges, and referential integrity
- Create objects in the correct dependency order
- Insert, update, and delete records through a preview-first safety workflow
- Retrieve precise results with filters, sorting, pagination, aliases, and expressions
- Calculate summaries with string, numeric, date, conditional, and aggregate functions
- Combine related information through inner, outer, self, and multi-table joins
- Diagnose duplicated, missing, and unexpectedly multiplied results
- Use subqueries, common table expressions, set operations, and window functions
- Rank products, calculate running totals, and compare values across periods
- Normalize schemas without fragmenting simple concepts unnecessarily
- Plan safer migrations, constraint changes, renames, and structural updates
- Protect multi-step operations with transactions, savepoints, locks, and rollback
- Recognize deadlocks and retry only appropriate transient failures
- Create views, stored procedures, stored functions, triggers, and scheduled events
- Apply least privilege and protect credentials
- Reduce SQL-injection risk through parameterized statements
- Read execution plans and add indexes only when evidence supports them
- Create logical backups and prove recovery through isolated restoration
- Import, export, monitor, and maintain stored information responsibly
- Connect a Python application through the official connector
- Manage connection timeouts, TLS verification, CRUD operations, and application transactions
- Complete a portfolio-ready relational project with security, performance, recovery, and validation records
The explanations are designed for complete beginners, but the working habits reflect professional practice. Readers learn to preview destructive operations, inspect affected-row counts, test constraints with invalid values, measure before optimizing, and restore backups instead of merely assuming they work.
No previous SQL or database experience is required. The book is suitable for students, career switchers, junior developers, analysts, technical-support professionals, independent builders, and anyone creating a website, internal tool, catalogue, ordering system, or modest software product.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
