Critics in the first half of our own century contnued to deplore his philosophical unorthodoxy and artistic essentricity. Mr. Rieger isolates three Shelleyan "heresies," all of them artistic in origin and all defensible. Shelley's major symbols of creative Imagination owe far less to Platonism than to occult tradition and the heresies of the early Church. And though he employed the Romantic analogy from religious sacrament to literary metaphor, in the end he denied the validity of both. Finally, he sought less to enlighten his audience than to astound and limit it--less to make his vision plain than to obscure it from the stares of the uninitiated.(Publisher).
