Charlie, a rising star in minor league baseball, is urged by his pastor brother to return home for a short visit with their dying father. However, it quickly becomes clear that their father, Gordon, and Charlie's brother, Abe, have a different plan in mind. Unable to coach his little league team any longer, Gordon's dying wish is for Charlie to lead his cherished A’s through the playoffs, defeat their rivals, the Giants, and reach the world championship game, Little League World Series. Charlie is feeling guilty about killing Abe's chance to go pro after high school when Charlie's wild pitch shatters Abe's collarbone, and he agrees to coach. The other reason Charlie wants to coach his son is that he has with Terry back in high school.
Despite Charlie's determination to leave his past behind after being cast out by Gordon, unexpected circumstances lead him to encounter his lost love, Teri, and his high school rival, the Giants' coach, Herbert, whom Charlie relentlessly bullies bull in High School,
Youth sports generate a yearly $40 billion dollar industry, and Herbert wants a piece of it. He plans to implement his military-style baseball training program across Little League teams nationwide, including having the kids wear military uniforms. Aware of the negative impact these tactics have on players, Charlie commits himself to stopping Herbert's scheme.
When the A’s and the Giants face-off, the two teams go neck and neck for the wild-card spot in the championship. A new pitch helps defeat the Giants in their first game.
The crooked board approves Herb’s demand that the top players on the A’s team be replaced with a six-year-old T-ball player, and havoc ensues.
As the final game intensifies, with the lead constantly shifting between the teams, Herbert persistently shouts commands like a drill sergeant. The focus has shifted from teamwork and giving their best effort to winning no matter what. Observing the disheartened state of both teams, Charlie is determined to restore the spirit and essence of the game.
Gordon forgives Charlie for killing Abe's chance to go pro after high school when Charlie's wild pitch shatters Abe's collarbone. Later, Abe confesses that their father wasn't dying.
Charlie and his team devise a strategy to outsmart their rivals. The A’s begin a bizarre game, showcasing their skills with circus-like tricks. Once the Giants catch on, both teams unite, parading around the field with picket signs to signal to the adults that they've gone too far. It's a mutiny in the dugout.
Charlie learns that sometimes you must lose the battle to win the war.
