- Music Practice
The book delves into the history of musical measurement, the influence of Pythagorean number theory, and the role of ratio in understanding pitch. It discusses why some intervals are bounded by dissonance, how quarter- and third-tones entered Greek theory, and why the Fourth often played the part of the octave in their system. It also explains the challenges of reconstructing ancient practices from fragments and how later readers interpret these ideas in light of modern tuning.
- Learn how ancient theories tied musical intervals to simple numerical ratios.
- See the tools and methods used to estimate interval sizes, from string lengths to monochords.
- Understand why Greek theory favored certain intervals and how this shaped scales.
- Discover the connection between number, harmony, and the perception of pitch in early music.
Ideal for readers curious about the origins of musical tuning, ancient theory, and the math behind interval ratios.
