The Music Major Myth
What Students Think, What Actually Happens, and How to Succeed When It Counts
What does it really mean to major in music?
For many high school students, the decision feels natural. You've spent years in rehearsals, performances, and lessons. You've been told you're good. You love what you do. So the next step-studying music in college-seems like the obvious choice.
But the reality is more complex than most students expect.
The Music Major Myth takes an honest look at the transition from high school musician to collegiate music student, uncovering the gap between what students think they're preparing for and what they actually experience once they arrive.
Drawing from years of experience working with students at this critical turning point-along with a nationwide survey of 183 collegiate music faculty across 43 states, spanning auditions, recruitment, applied instruction, and first-year advising-this book offers a clear, practical, and deeply human perspective on what it takes to succeed in a music program.
This is not a textbook. This is not a step-by-step manual. Instead, it is a guide to understanding the realities of music study at the next level:
- Why being "good" in high school doesn't always translate the way you expect
- What practicing actually means-and why most students get it wrong at first
- How to navigate lessons, ensembles, and academic demands
- What separates students who thrive from those who struggle
- How to manage time, expectations, and the emotional challenges of the first year
- Why culture, connection, and purpose matter just as much as performance
Whether you are a student considering a music degree, a parent trying to understand the path ahead, or an educator supporting students through this transition, The Music Major Myth provides the clarity and perspective needed to move forward with confidence.
Because the goal isn't just to get into a music program. It's to be ready for what comes next.
