Add to basketMusic Made Simple (1982) by Peter Dimond. Heinemann. ISBN: 0434985120 . Condition: Good. Every generation produces at least one book that boldly declares it can make an intimidating subject "simple." Mathematics made simple. Economics made simple. Nuclear physics made simple. This, thankfully, aims a little lower and sets out to make music simple?which, depending on how many years you?ve spent staring blankly at a treble clef, may still feel like a minor miracle. Published in 1982, Peter Dimond?s Music Made Simple is one of those reassuring educational books that belongs to an era when learning was expected to involve a pencil, a bit of patience and perhaps the occasional sigh of frustration, rather than a smartphone app congratulating you with animated fireworks for correctly identifying middle C. For anyone who has ever wondered why some notes sit on lines, others perch between them, and why a crotchet isn?t a gardening tool, this book patiently begins to untangle the mystery. It takes the language of music?which at first glance resembles a secret code devised by monks with rulers?and translates it into something approaching common sense. The wonderful thing about music theory is that it appears terrifying until, quite suddenly, it doesn?t. One day you?re convinced that time signatures exist solely to make life difficult. A few chapters later you?re nodding wisely at a 6/8 rhythm as though you?ve always understood it. It?s one of the few branches of knowledge where confidence increases almost invisibly until you find yourself absent-mindedly tapping out rhythms on the kitchen table. Peter Dimond writes with the calm confidence of someone who has watched countless students arrive convinced they are "not musical" before gently persuading them otherwise. The explanations are logical, carefully paced and refreshingly free from unnecessary jargon. Rather than treating music as some mysterious gift bestowed only upon prodigies in velvet waistcoats, he presents it as something that ordinary mortals can actually learn. Of course, learning music has always involved a curious imbalance. You may spend weeks mastering notation, scales and intervals, only to discover that the guitarist in the corner who "just plays by ear" has somehow become the star of the evening. Life is unfair like that. Nevertheless, knowing why something works remains deeply satisfying, and this book provides exactly that understanding. Reading it today also brings a pleasant wave of nostalgia. It belongs to the age of upright pianos in school halls, recorder ensembles of wildly varying quality, and music teachers whose unwavering optimism somehow survived thirty enthusiastic children attempting "Greensleeves" simultaneously. Educational publishing in the early 1980s had a wonderfully practical air about it. There were no QR codes leading to online tutorials, no downloadable worksheets and certainly no artificial intelligence composing practice exercises. Just clear explanations, sensible diagrams and the quiet expectation that the reader would actually do a little work. This copy is in good condition , making it an excellent choice for budding musicians, nostalgic teachers, collectors of vintage educational books or anyone who has ever promised themselves that one day they really would learn to read music properly. Even if your musical ambitions extend no further than understanding what everyone else in the choir seems to be talking about, it will earn its place on the shelf. From Crappy Old Books ?because every virtuoso, from Mozart to the chap valiantly wrestling with "Three Blind Mice" on a slightly out-of-tune recorder, had to start somewhere. This book won?t instantly transform you into a concert pianist, but it might finally explain why the dots are where they are. And that?s considerably more useful than pretending you?ve understood all along. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS.
