Print on Demand. This book, a seminal work by the author, meticulously analyzes diffraction phenomena in apertures of finite size. Beginning with the foundational work of James Clerk Maxwell, the author extends and refines diffraction theory by addressing both scalar and vector diffraction through various apertures. The book bridges multiple scattering theory with electromagnetic and diffraction theory, providing a comprehensive understanding of light scattering in complex and realistic environments. The author unveils the complex interactions of electromagnetic waves and physical structures, underscoring the significance of boundary conditions and the subtle intricacies of electromagnetic radiation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

The present authors have previously presented two different methods for calculating the field diffracted when a wave hits an aperture in a thin Both methods were applied to soft screens, i.e. Screens on which the wave function vanishes. Some results were also given in [l] for hard screens on which the normal derivative of the wave function vanishes, but interaction between various parts of the edge of the screen. Was not taken into account. In the present article these two methods are extended to yield more complete results for hard screens, in that interaction is taken into account.
