Add to basketChuck Backus writes about his family, and his early years growing up in West Virginia, and then his studies at Ohio University, where he graduated with an engineering degree.
He moved to Arizona to pursue his masters and doctorate degrees in nuclear engineering at the University of Arizona in Tucson. That led to a job at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, working on their nuclear rocket program.
After three years at Westinghouse, he accepted a professorship at Arizona State University in Tempe, where he later became provost of ASU East in Mesa.
Retiring from education brought him to his life-long ambition of being a rancher. He writes in detail about his ranching career on his Superstition Ranch at the edge of the Superstition Wilderness and his Northern Ranch in the high country near Lakeside, Arizona.
