Print on Demand. This book is an ethnography of the traditional bullfights held in and around Sabugal, a village in the northeast of Portugal, during the first decades of the twentieth century. Set against a backdrop of rural life in a region of Portugal steeped in history and tradition, the author provides a gripping account of these chaotic and bloody spectacles, painting a vivid picture of the bullfights themselves, the build-up of excitement, the atmosphere of the crowd, the spectacle of men taunting the bull with lances, and the tragic deaths of the animals. The author reflects on the cultural significance of the bullfights, exploring the social and economic forces that shaped them, and the role they played in the lives of the local people. Through detailed descriptions and evocative language, this book transports the reader to another time and place, offering a rich and immersive experience that sheds light on a fascinating aspect of Portuguese rural culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
