Paperback. A murdered man. A silent bell. An unfinished peal that should have stayed buried.Detective Inspector Ruth Calder has spent twenty-seven years avoiding the sound of cathedral bells. Then a body is found at the foot of Elmsford Cathedral's tower, hands folded around a muted hand-bell. No visible wounds. No signs of struggle. Only fresh rope-burn marks scored into the stone, and the chilling sound of half-muffled bells ringing from an empty chamber above.Ruth knows the sound. She grew up in that tower. When a second victim is discovered, then a third, each staged with bell-ringing symbols and fragments of red-and-white rope, Ruth realizes the killer is not choosing victims at random. The murders are following a method, a precise change-ringing sequence called Elmsford Surprise Major. The last time that method was rung, a young man fell from the cathedral tower and died. The official record called it an accident. Ruth knows it was not that simple. As the killings move closer to the people who were present that night, Ruth is forced back into the room she fled as a teenager, the ringing chamber where her father led the band, her brother stood silent, and one unfinished peal became a lie that lasted nearly three decades. Now someone is completing the sequence in blood. And Ruth may be one of the bells. The Muffled Peal is a dark psychological serial killer thriller featuring ritual murders, buried secrets, police procedural tension, and a chilling cathedral mystery. A murdered man. A silent bell. An unfinished peal that should have stayed buried.
Detective Inspector Ruth Calder has spent twenty-seven years avoiding the sound of cathedral bells.
Then a body is found at the foot of Elmsford Cathedral’s tower, hands folded around a muted hand-bell. No visible wounds. No signs of struggle. Only fresh rope-burn marks scored into the stone, and the chilling sound of half-muffled bells ringing from an empty chamber above.
Ruth knows the sound.
Perfect for readers who enjoy cerebral crime fiction, profiler-style suspense, and ritual killer thrillers.
