From the Back Cover
Come home to honest American cooking. In a cookbook that's wise, personal, feisty, and loving, Helen Witty takes us on a 200-recipe journey back to our culinary roots, and reinstates the full-flavored dishes that once reigned over family tables everywhere. Peerless Mashed Potatoes and Pristine Pot Roast, chunky Lobster Stew and Angel Cake-page through this book as you would an heirloom file of dog-eared recipe cards, and listen to Mrs. Witty as she reveals over 40 years of professional secrets, from sniffing out the perfect melon to preparing, trussing, stuffing, and roasting a glorious Thanksgiving turkey.
Helen Witty is a contributor to Gourmet, Food and Wine, Family Circle, and numerous other magazines, and a three-time winner of the prestigious Tastemaker-IACP/Seagram awards for cookbook excellence. She and her husband live on the eastern end of Long Island, between potato fields and fleets of baymen.
"I have been eating Mrs. Witty's home-style menus for over thirty years now, and I'm happy to tell you they are GOOD." -RICHARD L. WITTY
"Mrs. Witty's book makes us long for a weekend invitation to her home . . . to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at least twice. Filled with Helen's wit, warmth, charm-and flavor combinations-this book will bring us all back to our kitchens with fresh ideas for our favorite dishes." -JULEE ROSSO AND SHEILA LUKINS, authors of The New Basics Cookbook
