- Political Theory and History
A pointed 1850s address on how finance, immigration, and foreign influence shape American unity—and what one speaker saw as threats to the Republic.
This edition presents John Minor Botts’s critique of prevailing economic policy and his call to defend the nation’s institutions.
In a brisk, argument-driven style, the book examines money policy, trade, and the idea of a sub-treasury. It argues against letting foreign interests steer national economics and weighs the impact on everyday work, communities, and national prosperity. The text also addresses how immigration and naturalization fit into civic rights and duties, emphasizing loyalty to the United States while preserving individual conscience and religious liberty.
- Explains the critique of early American financial systems and their alleged dangers to national prosperity.
- Discusses the effect of foreign trade and capital on American labor and industry.
- Explores views on immigration, naturalization, and the balance of civic rights and responsibilities.
- Offers a historical perspective on how political economy and constitutional limits were viewed in the era.
Ideal for readers interested in mid-19th century political thought, American political economy, and debates over union, immigration, and state power.
