Book Description Printed by Prentsmi ju Jóns Helgasonar for Verlag., Reykjavik., 1971. 8vo. (230 x 155 mm). [8 unnumbered leaves]. Blank leaf with Roth's signature and numbering, leaf with half-title, leaf with 'diter rot gewidmet', leaf with printed title, leaf with quotation, leaf with single printed sentence, blank leaf, final leaf with justification recto; printed text on thin turquoise paper, this copy unopened. Stapled as issued in limp card boards, thin turquoise paper jacket with printed titles to front cover. Dieter Roth's scarce gnomic artist book. From the edition limited to 200 numbered copies (with 20 author copies), signed and numbered by Roth in pencil and dated '71'. Roth takes his llinguistic and semantic caprice to extremes with this simple but evocative artist book. The title poses a question, 'Who is the one who doesn't know who Mozart is?', which the book, or perhaps more accurately the basis for or skeleton of a book, attempts to answer. With the traditional modes of the book present: a half-title, dedication leaf, title page, introductory quotation (in this case 'Es füllt sich mit Erwartung da rein das kleine Kind - so will es sein' likely coined by Roth himself) and a leaf with publication details, the actual content is sparse: a single leaf with the single answering line 'Ich weiss es nicht' (I don't know); the work is certainly an essay and Roth certainly answers his self-posed question but the resulting book bears rather more relation to art and its caprices than academia and its rigour. Dobke describes the book as part of the group of 'monothematic texts often developed in a strongly serial manner'. [Dobke H4]. Bookseller Inventory # 34406
