Veronica Sherborne developed a unique way of engaging children and young
people with severe learning difficulties in interactive learning which
became known as Sherborne Developmental Movement, described in her book,
Developmental Movement for Children (Worth Publishing 2001). In its
conception, she drew on her knowledge of child development, her intense
interest in human movement and its psychological implications. Although
Sherborne Developmental Movement has its roots in education, current
practitioners come from diverse professions, including physiotherapy,
occupational therapy and speech and language therapy, as well as education.
The recent publication of Cyndi Hill's book, Communication through Movement
(Sunfield Publications, 2006) has provoked a quest for further exploration
into the potential benefits of Sherborne Developmental Movement as an
interactive approach. Moving with Research aims to confirm, encourage and,
we hope, inspire both new and experienced practitioners to take a proactive
role in testing out Veronica Sherborne's claims.
Moving with Research presents research which has been carried out in both
the UK and Europe by educationalists, therapists and health professionals.
The impetus for producing this book has arisen from the current high
demands for evidence-based practice, and the need of head teachers,
therapists, funding bodies and local authorities for evidence of the
efficacy of the Sherborne Developmental Movement (SDM) programme and its
beneficial and worthwhile effects.

About the Author
Education where she first met Veronica Sherborne, who was a guest lecturer
for just one day. Two years later, while teaching children with severe
disabilities in Canada, Elizabeth contacted Veronica for advice, and their
communication lasted for the next 30 years. While raising three children,
Elizabeth continued to seek ways of using movement to bring out the best in
very young children, adolescents with behaviour problems, populations with
special health problems and special needs, and the elderly. This led her
into doctoral study at Glasgow University and, after teaching in a variety
of schools for over 20 years, she now works in the university sector.
Elizabeth has seen for herself, time after time, how SDM can change lives,
and this way of working with movement crosses cultural, age, gender and
disability barriers in leading people to become at home in their own bodies
and to learn to form relationships. She has been delighted to gather
research projects from all over Europe into this book.
Jo Egerton is research fellow/publications manager at Sunfield School for
young people with severe and complex intellectual disabilities in Clent,
Worcestershire. She has worked in the field of special education for 10
years, and during that time has held posts in teaching, research,
residential care, leisure and development. She holds a Postgraduate
Certificate in Education and has a master's degree in learning disability
studies. She has co-edited two books with Barry Carpenter, and has authored
and co-authored several journal articles. While working in Oxfordshire, she
developed On Track, a Mencap-funded accessible newspaper for young people
with intellectual disabilities in the county. She has presented at a number
of conferences.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to WorldofBooks, Coventry, WMD, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
