Paperback. "The Move Towards Europe's Sovereignty: Europe's Strategic Leap Toward Economic Independence and Sustainable Innovation" by Matt Morissen presents a comprehensive examination of Europe's urgent quest for economic sovereignty in an era of geopolitical uncertainty, supply chain vulnerabilities, and climate crisis. The book argues that sovereignty is not about isolationism but about strategic autonomy-the capacity to shape Europe's destiny while remaining engaged globally. The book traces Europe's journey from post-Cold War globalization to a strategic recalibration driven by multiple shocks: the COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical supply chain fragilities; geopolitical tensions with major powers highlighted technological dependencies; and the climate crisis demanded urgent transformation. Morissen contends that these challenges, while daunting, present unprecedented opportunities to reimagine Europe's industrial, technological, and social foundations.Nearshoring and Industrial Resilience: The book positions nearshoring as a cornerstone of sovereignty, bringing production closer to home to enhance control, reduce emissions, and rebuild industrial capacity across Europe. Central and Eastern European countries emerge as key hubs, while policy incentives and workforce development are essential enablers.Deep Tech as Strategic Imperative: Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, advanced materials, and biotechnology are presented as foundational technologies for sovereignty. Europe's scientific excellence provides a strong base, but significant investments in commercialization, talent retention, and venture capital are urgently needed to compete globally.Climate Leadership and Economic Transformation: The European Green Deal is framed as both an environmental and economic strategy. Renewable energy, green infrastructure, and emerging climate technologies create new industries, jobs, and strategic independence from fossil-fuel dependence.Circular and Regenerative Business Models: Moving beyond linear "take-make-dispose" models, circular economy principles-waste reduction, resource efficiency, and lifecycle extension-offer pathways to sustainable prosperity while reducing reliance on imported raw materials.Digital Sovereignty and Cybersecurity: Control over data, cloud infrastructure, and digital assets is essential for autonomy. Robust data governance, trusted digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity capabilities protect European values and interests.Financing the Transition: A sophisticated blend of public funding (EU programs, green bonds, innovation funds) and private investment (venture capital, impact investing) is required to scale sovereignty initiatives.Social Inclusion: Education, reskilling, and social dialogue ensure that the benefits of sovereignty are equitably distributed, preventing the exacerbation of inequalities.Balancing Sovereignty and Globalization: The book navigates the tension between strategic autonomy and global cooperation, advocating for "selective openness"-strengthening internal capabilities while shaping international norms and partnerships.Germany's industrial renaissance (Industry 4.0, Mittelstand, Energiewende), Nordic sustainability leadership (renewable energy, circular economies, social inclusion), and Southern Europe's emerging innovation hubs (Barcelona, Lisbon, Milan, Valencia) demonstrate diverse pathways to sovereignty. The book emphasizes that sovereignty is not a static endpoint but a continuous, evolving process requiring collective will, ingenuity, and responsibility. The future scenarios presented-committed sovereignty, sustainability vanguard, balanced engagement, and cautionary dependence-highlight the high stakes and urgent need fo Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

The book argues that sovereignty is not about isolationism but about strategic autonomy—the capacity to shape Europe's destiny while remaining engaged globally.
The book traces Europe's journey from post-Cold War globalization to a strategic recalibration driven by multiple shocks: the COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical supply chain fragilities; geopolitical tensions with major powers highlighted technological dependencies; and the climate crisis demanded urgent transformation. Morissen contends that these challenges, while daunting, present unprecedented opportunities to reimagine Europe's industrial, technological, and social foundations.
Nearshoring and Industrial Resilience: The book positions nearshoring as a cornerstone of sovereignty, bringing production closer to home to enhance control, reduce emissions, and rebuild industrial capacity across Europe. Central and Eastern European countries emerge as key hubs, while policy incentives and workforce development are essential enablers.
Deep Tech as Strategic Imperative: Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, advanced materials, and biotechnology are presented as foundational technologies for sovereignty. Europe's scientific excellence provides a strong base, but significant investments in commercialization, talent retention, and venture capital are urgently needed to compete globally.
Climate Leadership and Economic Transformation: The European Green Deal is framed as both an environmental and economic strategy. Renewable energy, green infrastructure, and emerging climate technologies create new industries, jobs, and strategic independence from fossil-fuel dependence.
Circular and Regenerative Business Models: Moving beyond linear "take-make-dispose" models, circular economy principles—waste reduction, resource efficiency, and lifecycle extension—offer pathways to sustainable prosperity while reducing reliance on imported raw materials.
Digital Sovereignty and Cybersecurity: Control over data, cloud infrastructure, and digital assets is essential for autonomy. Robust data governance, trusted digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity capabilities protect European values and interests.
Financing the Transition: A sophisticated blend of public funding (EU programs, green bonds, innovation funds) and private investment (venture capital, impact investing) is required to scale sovereignty initiatives.
Social Inclusion: Education, reskilling, and social dialogue ensure that the benefits of sovereignty are equitably distributed, preventing the exacerbation of inequalities.
Balancing Sovereignty and Globalization: The book navigates the tension between strategic autonomy and global cooperation, advocating for "selective openness"—strengthening internal capabilities while shaping international norms and partnerships.
Germany's industrial renaissance (Industry 4.0, Mittelstand, Energiewende), Nordic sustainability leadership (renewable energy, circular economies, social inclusion), and Southern Europe's emerging innovation hubs (Barcelona, Lisbon, Milan, Valencia) demonstrate diverse pathways to sovereignty.
The book emphasizes that sovereignty is not a static endpoint but a continuous, evolving process requiring collective will, ingenuity, and responsibility. The future scenarios presented—committed sovereignty, sustainability vanguard, balanced engagement, and cautionary dependence—highlight the high stakes and urgent need for decisive action.
