Mount Lowe in California, Cyanotypes and Boulder and other Locations in Colorado

About this Item

18 good-sized black & white photos (approx. 20 x 13 cm.) pasted down one to a page and 89 cyanotypes mounted one to six to a page on 23 album pages. Also found in the album are six smaller black and white photos and 10 printed images (six full-page, one double-page and three smaller). Oblong cloth album with 25 leaves (25 x 17 cm.), Images mounted on both sides of almost leaves -- the verso of the final leaf is unused. The first six pages contain large photos relating to the ill-fated Mount Lowe Railway which ran from Altadena, California to Mount Lowe in the nearby San Gabriel Mountains. Two have captions in the image: (1) "The City on the Mount." Mt. Lowe Ry."; and (2) "Overlooking City on the Mount. Mount Lowe Railway." No identification of photographers. Next are three captioned California photos: (1) "516. Hotel Green, Pasadena, Calif.";, (2) "936. Green Residence, Altadena, Cal.); and (3 "500. Hotel del Coronado. East." All three identify photographer as Park & Co. Photo or Park Photo. The smaller-sized blue cyanotypes occur in three separated groups of consecutive pages with no captions or identification of photographer(s). A group of 9 photos showing Boulder and nearby places in Colorado in the mid to late 1890s is sandwiched between two of the groups of cyanotype pages. The nine large Colorado photos have descriptive captions in the image: (1) "Green Mountain near the Chautauqua" J. B. Sturtevant No. 22; (2) "Peterson Lakes"; (3) "Boulder, Colo. 1896"; (4) "Mouth of Boulder Canon, Colo." J. B. Sturtevant No. 61; (5) "Bevier Peak. No. 257, Boulder Canon, Colo." J. B. Sturtevant; (6) Lincoln Falls, South Fork of Middle Boulder, Colorado." No. 58. J. B. Sturtevant; (7) "Range near Eldora, Colo." No. 96. J. B. Sturtevant; and (8) "Bloomerville Cut April 16th 1899 C. & N. Ry." The partially-covered ninth of those Colorado photos shows 11 men standing on or by Engine No. 30 in the narrow Bloomerville Cut with tall mounds of snow visible on both sides. Most photos undated but all probably date around 1900 or a few years earlier. Joseph Bevier Sturtevant, 1851-1910, a longtime photographer in Boulder, Colorado, was also popularly known as Rocky Mountain Joe. He may have taken the three Colorado photos on which his name does not appear. Seller Inventory # 94376
