About this Item
Blue cloth binding with silver gilt lettering to the spine, gilt crest to front board 'Haileybury College, Hanbury Prize, ' Size, 9.5 x 7.00 x 0.75 inches approx. , generally clean, corners a little bumped, minor foxing to endpapers, no insciptions, interior pages pristine, printed on thick card-like paper, clear typeface, the book is not paginated, there are photographs throughout each with its own description, These are drivers and racing cars from the 1930s. The book ends with lists of Grand Prix Winners giving names, the vehicle they were driving and their speeds, V0iturette races (1000 cc) , English Races and Sports Car Races. The book opens with a full page illustration opposite which is the title page which is also illustrated in black and white (that has a sepia feel to it) , there is a Preface by the Author followed by a Foreward by Rt Hon Earl Howe. The opening article by Richard Seaman is entitled What is Grand Prix Racing? . The names of drivers, their achievements and their cars will be familiar to commited motor racing enthusiasts. This is an unusual book that is scarce and collectible. It certainly has an unusual style, the photography is particularly interesting since the images look as if they are in sepia tones. There are plenty of photographs in this book as an example there is one of a car requiring a wheel change the team is dealing with a Napier-Railton in the pits at Brooklands in 1935 during the British Racing Drivers 500-mile race. It eventually finished first with an average speed of 121 mph driven by John Cobb and Rose-Richards. There is a huge contrast between the three/four men working on the car back in the 1930s with today's army of skilled mechanics poised in the pits with modern tools to do the repairs in record time.
