Motivational Interviewing for Nurses

Patient-Centered Communication Scripts and Practical MI Conversations for Medication Adherence, Lifestyle Change, and Difficult Patient Encounters in Frontline Healthcare

Every nurse has had this experience. You explain a care plan clearly, the patient nods along, signs the discharge papers, and returns three weeks later with the same preventable crisis. The education was accurate. The delivery was compassionate. And it did not work. The problem is not clinical knowledge. The problem is that traditional patient education relies on a communication model that research has shown fails to change behavior in ambivalent patients.

Motivational Interviewing: The Missing Skill in Nursing Communication

Motivational interviewing is one of the most evidence-based communication approaches in healthcare, proven in hundreds of clinical trials to improve medication adherence, support smoking cessation, and reduce hospital readmissions. Yet every MI book on the market is written for therapists and counselors, filled with clinical psychology language and built around 50-minute therapy sessions that have nothing to do with bedside nursing. This guide is the first MI resource written specifically for nurses, designed for the realities of 12-hour shifts, six-patient assignments, and three-minute medication pass conversations.

Ready-to-Use Bedside Scripts for Real Clinical Scenarios

Inside you will find more than 50 full patient-nurse conversation scripts organized by the encounters you face every shift. Each script shows exactly what to say when a patient stops taking their medications, refuses lifestyle changes, demands to leave AMA, or shuts down during discharge teaching. Scripts cover medication non-adherence, smoking cessation, substance use screening, diet and exercise resistance, chronic disease fatigue, pain management and opioid conversations, angry or hostile patients, family conflicts at the bedside, and culturally sensitive communication across diverse populations.

Practical MI Tools That Fit Your Workflow

This handbook maps the four MI processes directly onto nursing tasks you already perform: admission assessments, medication reconciliation, bedside rounding, discharge teaching, and follow-up phone calls. It includes the OARS skills with nursing-specific examples, the DARN-CAT framework for recognizing patient change talk, readiness and confidence rulers adapted for clinical use, and the Elicit-Provide-Elicit method for patient education that actually works. Seven appendices provide a printable badge-sized quick-reference card, fill-in-the-blank script templates, a 30-day self-assessment worksheet, MI-informed SBAR documentation samples, and a complete glossary of MI terms translated into plain nursing language.
