The other she writes late at night, off the record, in a language only she will read. She has built a career, and a life, on the belief that the past can be contained on paper. For thirty years, Dr. Mari Vega has treated the people other people damaged. She knows how to sit with a stranger, take a history, name what is wrong, and set it all down in clean clinical prose. Her office is orderly. Her notes are precise. Her past stays exactly where she has filed it. Then three new clients arrive in a single week, and the notes stop staying inside the room. One arrives with a folder Mari does not remember opening. One notices a detail she has spent years hiding. One seems to be writing her. Separately, each is only a difficult intake, another case to assess and file. Together, they begin to circle the single story Mari has spent her whole life refusing to open: her mother, her family, and the eight years she has left out of every record. The deeper the sessions go, the more the line between doctor and patient thins. Every clean clinical note has a second version underneath it, and every diagnosis Mari writes for someone else starts to read like one she should have written for herself. She is the most reliable narrator in the room and the least, and by the time she understands which, the truth is already at the door. The structure pulls you in the same way. You will read Mari's notes the way she reads her clients, certain you have caught the pattern before she has. That is the trap the novel sets, and springs, with the patient precision of a listener who has been at this far longer than you realized. This is also a novel about place and lineage. The high desert between Santa Fe and Abiquiu carries its own memory, and so does Mari's family, whose Hispano and Genizara roots run deeper than the story anyone agreed to tell. Adobe walls, old churches, and roads that lead north into country where families have kept their silences for generations. What was passed down, what was hidden, and what was quietly renamed all press against the careful record she keeps, until the past she filed so neatly comes looking for her.Told through intake notes, provisional diagnoses, and the entries she was never supposed to keep, The Mother I Did Not Know is a slow-burn psychological suspense novel about memory, inheritance, and identity. It is a story about the histories we carry, the families that shape us, and what a woman owes the truth when the truth has teeth. For readers of unreliable narrators, twist-driven suspense, and buried family secrets that hold on until the last page. Fans of quietly menacing therapy-room suspense and literary thrillers with a strong sense of place will find a lot to love, and a discussion guide in the back makes it a natural pick for book clubs.Praise for The Mother I Did Not Know"I was hooked with the premise and it didn't disappoint.
