Colonel John S. Mosby, the renowned leader of the Ranger band bearing his name, said of Sam Chapman: "He was a Baptist minister who prayed through a six shooter, which he claimed was the most efficacious form of prayer, especially in dealing with Yankees." The twenty-two-year-old preacher-turned soldier had received his early schooling under Jed Hotchkiss who would later gain fame as Stonewall Jackson's mapmaker. When war erupted in 1861, Chapman was still pursuintg his studies at Richmond College. Enlisting as a private in the Warren Rifles, Chapman would later spend a year as a lieutenant in the Dixie Artillery.In early 1863 Sam joined John Mosby's fledgling group of Rangers where he would serve until mid-Apr8l 1865, when Mosby disbanded, rather than surrender, what had become the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry. Three times wounded - once so severely that his Union captors paroled him on the field of battle - Sam was one of Moasby's most gallant and trusted officers. Following his promotion to captain in command of a company, he led a detachment of Rangers in the ill-fated attack on a Yankee wagon train that culminated in the brutal execution of six of his men by Union cavalry. Followong the war this fierce fighter returned to his ministry, establishing and leading churches in the mountainous country of western Virginia. He would take time out to serve as chaplain of a volunteer infantry regimant in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Colonel Mosby called Chapman "The Fighting Parson." A fellow Ranger said: "He was the bravest man I ever knew."

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to BennettBooksLtd, Escondido, California, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
