This portable, up-to-date drug handbook includes all essential data for administering the most common prescription and over-the-counter drugs. More than 1,300 generic and 4,500 trade names are included. Thoroughly revised and updated, Mosby's 2000 Nursing Drug Reference will contain approximately 50 new monographs for drugs recently approved by the FDA (Appendix A), as well as hundreds of updates to the existing monographs. More than 1,000 new drug facts will include side effects, adverse reactions, precautions, interactions, contraindications, and IV therapy facts. The 2000 edition features several valuable additions to the content and design. New information about interactions of herbal products with prescription and OTC drugs has been integrated throughout the monographs, where applicable. A new identifying icon denotes this information within the monographs, and a new appendix lists names and uses of all herbal products for which interactions are included (Appendix H). All IV drug information now appears under the monograph subsection "Administer," with a new icon and subheading to make this crucial information easy to locate. To help nurses identify common drugs and deliver safe, high-quality patient care, a new 16-page insert contains a drug identification guide with approximately 135 full-color photographs of frequently prescribed tablets and capsules. The photos are arranged alphabetically by generic name, with common trade names and dosage strengths included. A new table of look-alike and sound-alike drug names is also included (Appendix G) to help ensure accurate drug administration. Another convenient new feature is the combination of all chemically similar forms of cephalosporin into a single monograph, with cross-references included alphabetically throughout the book in easy-to-find colored monograph header blocks. The same has been done with the penicillin monographs. The combination products appendix (Appendix D) has been expanded to include each drug's uses as well as the product's name and the dosages of its generic components. In addition, the general anesthetics have also been grouped together into an appendix (Appendix F) for convenient reference. Individual drug monographs contain generic names; Rx or OTC designations; pronunciation; U.S. and Canadian trade names; functional and chemical classification; controlled-substance schedule; action; uses; investigational uses; dosages and routes; available forms; side effects/adverse reactions; contraindications; precautions; pharmacokinetics; interactions; compatibilities; lab test interferences; nursing considerations; ? Nursing Alerts? denoted by icons; and treatment of overdose. A functional, two-color design highlights all monograph subheadings, while alphabetical organization and A-to-Z thumb tabs allow instant retrieval of essential information. A Windows disk is included with valuable supplemental information not found in the book on drugs and drug administration. Free quarterly Internet updates (February, May, August, and November) provide users with the latest drug alerts, abbreviated new drug monographs, tables of recently released U.S. and Canadian drugs, and links to useful drug-related websites. Features: * More than 1,000 updated drug facts in the 2000 edition ensures that users get the most up-to-date drug interactions, side effects, precautions, contraindications, and IV therapy facts as well as patient/family teaching guidelines. * Appendix containing approximately 50 drug monographs that are new to the 2000 edition provides information on the latest drugs. * Drug monographs organized alphabetically by generic name with handy thumb tabs in second colour allows quick, easy retrieval of information in clinical settings. * Drug identification guide with approximately 135 full-colour pictures of frequently prescribed tablets and capsules helps nurses identify common drugs and deliver safe, high-quality patient care. * Separate section of drug category information at the beginning of the book provides the user with a concise summary of the action, uses, side effects and other key information for each class of drugs. New to this edition: * Presents more than 1,000 new drug facts, including patient/family teaching guidelines as well as updated drug interactions, side effects, precautions, contraindications, and IV therapy facts. * Contains approximately 50 new monographs for drugs recently approved by the FDA (Appendix A) to provide the very latest drug information. * Integrates new information about interactions of herbal products with prescription and OTC drugs, where applicable, denoted by an eye-catching new icon. * Includes a new appendix that lists the names and uses of all herbal products for which interactions are included. * Groups all IV drug information under the monograph subsection "Administer," with a new icon and subheading to make this crucial information easy to locate. * Combines all chemically similar forms of cephalosporin and penicillin into single monographs, with cross-references included alphabetically throughout the book in easy-to-find colored monograph header blocks. * Features a 16-page insert containing a drug identification guide with approximately 135 full-color photographs of frequently prescribed tablets and capsules, to help nurses identify common drugs and deliver safe, high-quality patient care; photos are arranged alphabetically by generic name, with common trade names and dosage strengths included. * Includes a table of look-alike and sound-alike drug names (Appendix G) to help ensure accurate drug administration. * Groups the general anesthetics together in an appendix (Appendix F) for quick, convenient reference. * Expands the combination products appendix (Appendix D) to include uses for all drugs as well as product names and the dosages of generic components.
