Together with a large comment, clearing the author in every place, wherein he seemed obscure, out of the laws and customes of the Romans, and the Latine and Greek histories. By Sir Robert Stapylton, Knight. Published by authority." A translation, by Sir Robert Stapylton, of: Juvenal. Works. A revised version of the 1647 edition which was entitled: Juvenal's sixteen satyrs, or, a survey of the manners and actions of mankind. All pages and plates with very large margins. Text set with large fonts. Large ex-Libris by J.F. Badeley, from the Lyme Hall Library, dated 1904. Etched frontispiece by Wenceslaus Hollar after Robert Streeter; engraved portrait of Stapylton by Pierre Lombart; 16 etched plates by Hollar after Streeter, Johan Dankers, and Francis Barlow, each with explanatory text leaf. [22], 522, [28] pages. Folio, 17.25 x 10.5inches (44x27cm), contemporary mottled calf binding, rebacked, some damage to top left of front board, some loss of leather to the left lower corner of the back board. Joints partly cracked; considerable worm damage to the lower edges of the inside of front board and the endpapers, continuing for 5 pages to the title page, without affecting text. Further much smaller wormhole until ca. page 40. Then a single small hole in outer margins until page 100, worming in blank upper margins, near paper edge for approximately 50 leaves. Then again large wormholes in the last 4 leaves, the endpaper and the inside of the back board. All not affecting text. A few pages with water damage in the lower corner, not affecting text. Otherwise the pages are in very good condition, clean. Overall still an attractive copy, very good. Seller Inventory # 1660R
