Print on Demand. This book explores fortifications in Montreal from their inception to their eventual decline. As fortifications developed from wooden palisades to stone walls, they played an integral role in shaping Montreal's early history. The book delves into the political, military, and social contexts that influenced the construction and evolution of these defenses, providing insights into the city's past conflicts and its gradual transformation into a peaceful metropolis. The book's detailed examination of these fortifications offers a unique perspective on Montreal's rich history and its significance as a strategic location. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

- Modern History of Canada
The savages of America, like those of other lands usually adopted as a means of defence, a circular palisade, a form which appears to have been adhered to by many of the tribes which inhabited that portion of America, now com prised within the limits of the Dominion of Canada. When Jacques Cartier* in I 5 35, first visited the island whereon now stands the City of Montreal, he found it inhabited by a tribe of Indians, who had established themselves near the foot of the Mountain, which he named Mount Here they had erected their cabins or lodges, about 50 in number, the whole being encircled with a palisade formed of the trunks of trees set in a triple row. The outer and inner ranges inclined till they met and crossed near the summit.
