Shops with substance
Since launch, the retail world has been one of the pillars of monocle's editorial coverage. This is a must-have guide for anyone in the industry from the independent boutique owner to the shopping-mall ceo but, equally, for anyone who enjoys a bit of retail therapy.
We unpack what makes a perfect shopping experience and offer tips on how to launch, design and run your own store. Through interviews, in-depth reports, essays, insight and opinion, we explore the state of the high street and make a case for why bricks-and-mortar shops are resolutely here to stay.
What to expect:
Our favourite 100 shops
The ideal high street, market, kiosk and shopping mall
Advice on starting out
Essays: why we all love stationery shops, the perfect staff-to-customer ratio and more
The shuttered shops we wish still existed
Interviews with the industry's key players
Three countries that make selling look simple
The magazine, Monocle, covers the world with its network of bureaus in New York, Toronto, Zurich, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Tokyo, and Singapore. It also employs more than 30 dedicated correspondents - in cities from Bangkok to Bogota, Sao Paolo to Stockholm - as well as a team of on-the-road reporters based out of its headquarters in London. This team's deep understanding of cities and all they have to offer has now been compiled in The Monocle Travel Guide Series.

gestalten continues to actively reimagine the way in which we approach publishing. With our extensive range of titles, we not only seek to enhance and to enrich our reader's lives, but to continually engage with the surrounding creative landscape.
Our origin story began with a focus on the aesthetic, particularly that of graphic design and, over the last two decades, the scope of both our content and our expertise has widened. Today, using a myriad of observations of culture, people, art, and other intimate inspirational informants, we document and anticipate vital movements in architecture, visual culture, design & fashion, escapism, food & beverages, travel, and contemporary art. In 2014, Little Gestalten joined the literary ranks and ensured that there was a place for readers of all ages within the world of gestalten.
