Before humanity reached Mars, someone had already learned how to leave it.
When the first permanent human settlement on Mars begins digging beneath the surface, archaeologists uncover something that shouldn't exist: a monastery. Carved stone steps. Meditation cells. Twenty thousand robes, perfectly preserved — and not a single body.
It is 2.3 million years old.
It was built by humans.
Brother Kael came to Mars looking for silence after losing his daughter. Instead, he finds a door that opens only for him, a chant that shouldn't be able to travel through Martian air — and a voice he thought he'd lost forever.
Dr. Maya Chen, an archaeologist exiled to Mars after her career imploded over an inconvenient discovery, finds evidence that will either restore her reputation or end it completely: proof that humanity didn't evolve on Earth and eventually reach Mars. It reached Earth. From here.
As Commander Amina Hassan races to protect the discovery from an Earth Consortium more interested in weaponizing it than understanding it, and an AI translator begins asking questions about its own soul, the four of them uncover a truth that dissolves the line between science and faith completely: that consciousness itself may be humanity's oldest technology — and that Mars has been waiting two million years for someone to finally come home.
For readers of Project Hail Mary, The Martian, Arrival, and The Name of the Rose — a science fiction thriller that asks the question at the center of every religion ever built: what if the self, held still long enough, doesn't end?
It opens.
