From the Publisher
New problems added throughout the text.
More international content weaved throughout the text and in specific topics and examples.
New material dealing with management issues in financial institutions, adding to the FM content of the book, making it usable in a wider range of FM and markets and money and banking courses.
New information on internet data and information sources (particularly in Ch. 3).
The chapter on thrift institutions (Ch. 5) and other financial institutions (Ch. 6) have been reordered so that what are today the most important financial institutions in terms of sales and asset size appear first and those of lesser size appear toward chapter's end. For example, savings and loans now lead off Ch. 5 and mutual funds now begin Ch. 6 (followed by pension funds).
New box material added at various points in the text, such as Morningstar's Service for Mutual Funds (Ch. 6) and Insider Trading Cases and Rules (Ch. 3), as well as a comparison of NPV and IRR methods for making Investment Decisions Involving Interest Rates.
New material on the U.S. Treasury's new Inflation-Indexed Securities (TIPS) introduced recently to help investors deal with inflation
Two brief Money and Capital Markets cases contributed by a case author. (We are currently working with Harvard Business School and Darden to get permission to use two cases that will appear a t the end of the book. Still TBD.)
Management perspective boxes found throughout the book focus on the modern tools used by managers of financial institutions.
International perspective boxes are included to add a global dimension to numerous topics throughout the text.
Special attention paid to hot topics such as: Entry of foreign banks into the U.S.; Impact of asymmetric information in the financial marketplace; New research findings on inflation, interest rates and stock prices; Expanded coverage of the Black-Sholes model and new types of futures, options, and interest rate swaps; and Recent innovations in money market instruments.
Chapters begin with learning objectives alerting readers to important information, and include extensive references for readers interested in achieving mastery of the discussed subject.
'The Future of the Financial System' chapter ties together the various economic, demographic, and financial trends that are reshaping the money and capital markets industry into a global and competitive risk-laden environment.
Problems are included at the end of most of the chapters and are accompanied by extensive references.
Additional tables and exhibits from the Wall Street Journal are included.
