Print on Demand. This book is an investigation into the atomic and molecular structure of matter, addressing the chemical composition of the earth, sea, and air that makes up our world. Understanding that everything in our environment is composed of 64 simple substances allows the author to explore the profound ramifications of chemical composition on the natural world. The author claims that understanding these fundamental atomic structures is vital to understanding life on earth, from the smallest organisms to human beings, and to unlocking the secrets of energy found even in the heat from the sun. This book is recommended to anyone interested in chemistry or physics and will appeal especially to those interested in the history of scientific discovery. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Unlocking the tiny and the vast: from atoms to blooming color and heat in plants.
This volume surveys how matter is built from indivisible atoms and how groups of atoms form molecules. It also surveys how plants, minerals, and medicines reveal the same underlying laws, tying together chemistry, physics, and natural history in plain, readable terms.
- Learn how atoms and molecules are imagined, and why they’re said to be indestructible in a changing world.
- See how elements like metals, alkaloids, and botanical compounds behave, and why some substances power medicines and narcotics.
- Discover how flowers gain their colors, and why heat evolves in plant processes, including remarkable examples from arums and germinating seeds.
- Get a window into early microscopy and the way scientists connect light, heat, and living matter to the unseen world.
