Volume 1: Principles of Gene Manipulation and Genomics provides an overview of the future of genetic engineering and delves into the role of biotechnology and its applications in genetic engineering. It discusses the tools of recombinant technology, which have brought about revolution in our understanding of various complex biological phenomenon. Chapters cover mutagenesis, construction, and sequencing of DNA libraries along with applications of genetic engineering for improving health, preventing genetic diseases, enhancing food resources, managing environmental bioremediation, and more. Topics include genetic engineering tools for restriction enzymes and vectors, gene and cell division, mutation detection and screening in plants, population genetics, sexuality in bacteria, and more. Several chapters focus on the tools of recombinant technology, such as restriction enzymes, vectors, etc., that have paved the way for creating organisms of choice and opened new horizons in the field of medicine, agriculture, and industry for human welfare.
Volume 2: Applications and Exploring the Nucleus continues the coverage of generic engineering, dealing with the concept of genes, their relationship with chromosomes, and their functional manifestation to the benefit of organisms at large and for humans in particular. Topics include Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance, which explains the inheritance of traits visible through generations; , genome diversity and evolution genetic protein synthesis, recombination and evolution of DNA, transposable elements in genetics, chromosomal aberrations, and more. The volume also addresses genetic engineering in agricultural science for increased crop yields, to reduce costs for food or drug production, to reduce the need for pesticides, to enhance crop quality, etc.
Providing a wealth of knowledge, Molecular Genetics, Structures, Mechanisms, and Functions will be a valuable asset for researchers and scientists working in the field of genetics, molecular genetics, mutation breeding and plant breeding, as well as for faculty and students.
Tariq Ahmad Bhat, PhD, is serving as a Senior Lecturer Botany in the Department of Education, Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir, India. He is also founder member of Hon’ble CM’s Super 50 initiative. He is a life member of several scientific societies and a reviewer for several international scientific journals. The Government of India conferred him with a Best Innovative Science Teacher Award 2014 to recognize his meritorious services. He was conferred with a Sir Syed Gold Medal along with certificate of merit (2022) for outstanding contributions in the field of education and research by the Jammu and Kashmir Alig Society.
Abdul Rauf Shakoori, PhD, is a Distinguished National Professor and Professor Emeritus of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Punjab. Professor Shakoori has put in more than 60 years of meritorious service as a teacher and research scientist. He is amongst the pioneers who introduced modern trends in biological sciences and played a key role in the introduction of cellular and molecular biology as a subject of study and research at the universities of Pakistan. His research publications in the domains of bioremediation, bioinsecticides, and herbal medicine have significant implications on the economy of Pakistan. Dr. Shakoori has published over 660 original research articles in journals of international repute and supervised research work of 77 PhD students and 55 MPhil students. He has written 23 books published by national and international publishers. He has also contributed several chapters in a book published by Springer Verlag, Germany. Professor Shakoori developed collaborative research programs with scientists at the University of Massachusetts, Worcester, USA, where he also held a position of Visiting Professor of Cell Biology for more than 25 years. He has received various prestigious awards over the years in various countries.
Jameel M. Al-Khayri, PhD, is currently Professor of Plant Biotechnology at the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, College of Agriculture and Food Sciences, King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia. He has dedicated his research efforts to date palm biotechnology for the last three decades. He has published over 60 research articles and reviews in international journals, in addition to 30 book chapters. He has served as editor of several special issues of international journals on date palm, biotechnology, and sustainable agriculture under abiotic and biotic stress. He is also editor of 15 Springer reference books, including Date Palm Biotechnology, Date Palm Genetic Resources and Utilization (2 volumes), Date Palm Biotechnology Protocols (2 volumes), and Advances in Plant Breeding Strategies (9 volumes). He has been appointed as a member of the editorial boards and review panels of several international journals. He has participated in the organizing and scientific committees of international scientific conferences and contributed over 50 research presentations. In addition to teaching, graduate student advising, and conducting funded research projects, he has held various administrative posts. He is an active member of the International Society for Horticultural Science and Society for In Vitro Biology and serves as the National Correspondent of the International Association of Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology. He has also served as a member of Majlis Ash-Shura (Saudi Arabia Legislative Council) Fifth Session. Currently, he is maintaining an active research program on date palm focusing on genetic transformation, secondary metabolites and in vitro mutagenesis to enhance tolerance to abiotic and biotic stress. He is interested in the role of biotechnology in enhancing food security and the impact of global climate change on agriculture.
