Ever tried to explain to a mechanical lead why the software team's "simple fix" just broke a requirement three disciplines away? That gap—where skilled engineers from different domains talk past one another—is where complex programs often fail. This handbook was written to bridge that gap.
Across fourteen comprehensive chapters, you'll follow a single, continuous case study—a semi-autonomous ground vehicle's avionics architecture—from the first stakeholder requirement through architecture development, verification, resilience engineering, and program governance. Rather than presenting isolated concepts, every method is demonstrated in context, allowing you to see how each engineering decision influences the next.
Grounded in today's leading systems engineering standards—including ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010, ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148, the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (5th Edition), and SysML v2 (2025 Final Release)—this book emphasizes practical application over theory. You'll learn to:
- Build weighted trade-off models for complex design decisions.
- Compute Pareto frontiers and Nash equilibria for multi-team coordination.
- Perform Monte Carlo schedule risk analysis with realistic project data.
- Quantify technical debt using compounding-interest models.
- Apply industry-proven systems engineering techniques with fully worked numerical examples whose calculations can be independently verified.
Looking for a systems engineering reference that unifies human factors, digital twins, interface management, resilience engineering, and organizational governance into one cohesive framework instead of treating them as disconnected topics? This is the resource you've been searching for.
Inside You'll Discover- Fourteen in-depth chapters covering requirements engineering, system architecture, trade studies, human-systems integration, digital twins, interface management, verification and validation, risk analysis, resilience engineering, systems of systems, technical debt, and program leadership.
- Comprehensive worked examples and end-of-chapter practice problems, each with complete step-by-step solutions so you can master every method before applying it in real projects.
- A continuous case study that connects every chapter into one coherent systems engineering narrative, demonstrating how decisions evolve throughout an entire program lifecycle.
- A complete glossary, formula reference, and standards crosswalk for quick access to essential terminology, equations, and industry guidance.
Complex programs rarely fail because of weaknesses within a single discipline—they fail at the boundaries where disciplines intersect. Equip yourself with the tools, frameworks, and integrated methods needed to manage those critical connections with confidence.
