Understand the system. Interpret the readings. Troubleshoot with a clear plan.
Successful refrigeration and air-conditioning work starts with understanding what a system is telling you—and knowing what to check next.
Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning 2026 connects the principles of heat, pressure and refrigeration with the practical demands of HVAC/R service. Written for apprentices, vocational students and working technicians, it takes you from the refrigeration cycle and essential components to electrical controls, system servicing, fault diagnosis and EPA Section 608 certification preparation.
With 205 step-by-step service procedures and 105 practical laboratory activities, this guide gives you a structured way to turn technical knowledge into practical understanding.
Inside, you’ll learn to:
-
Make sense of system measurements. Understand pressure-temperature relationships, superheat, subcooling and the readings used to assess operating conditions.
-
Follow essential service processes. Work through procedures for leak testing, refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging and commissioning, with tools, safety requirements and expected results.
-
Understand electrical components and controls. Explore motors, capacitors, contactors, thermostats, wiring diagrams and the control sequences behind system operation.
-
Build a systematic approach to troubleshooting. Connect symptoms with measurements, distinguish refrigerant problems from electrical and airflow faults, and verify the results of corrective work.
-
Broaden your equipment knowledge. Study residential air conditioning, heat pumps, walk-in coolers, commercial refrigeration, rooftop units, VRF systems and chillers.
-
Understand newer refrigerants and technologies. Explore A2L refrigerants, R-32 and R-454B, variable-speed compressors, electronic expansion valves and refrigerant detection systems.
-
Prepare for EPA Section 608 certification. Review Core, Type I, Type II and Type III topics, then test your understanding with practice questions and explained answers.
Worked examples, diagrams, reference tables and laboratory exercises reinforce the material throughout. Formulas, conversions, a glossary and an index make it easier to return to the information you need.
Whether you are building your foundation in the trade, reinforcing classroom instruction or refreshing your service knowledge, this book helps you understand both how a procedure is performed and why each step matters.
Build the knowledge behind better measurements, clearer diagnoses and more confident service decisions.
