Hardcover with dust jacket in good condition. Colors are faded with one taped rip to top edge. Blue covers with gold lettering to spine. Pages slightly yellowing with age but clean and unmarked and very readable. There are a few B & W photographs throughout. The author traces the development of modern French music from the turn of the century to the present day--a golden age of inventiveness and great compositional achievement--and relates the music to changing social, literary, and artistic trends both inside and outside France. The author critically analyzes the works and discusses the lives of leading early composers: Faure; d'Indy; Rousel, Koechlin; Ravel; Dukas and Debussy--as well such later composers as Messiaen; Jolivet; Boulez; and Varese. The main emphasis is on the part played by 20th century French composers, especially Debussy, in bringing about the new movement in music.
