Very good cloth copy in very good dustjacket. xxii, 769 pages. Dedication by the author and previous owner's name inside. Examines the achievements and problems of modern drug use by comparing today's events with those in the ancient Egyptian, babylonian, Judaic, and Greek civilizations; it continues the comparison through Roman and Medieval times, and watches the Renaissance and the transformation that followed the slow growth of modern science. It attempts to see, in each age, medicine arise from the beliefs and way of life of the people, and find its expression in the strange or helpful use of drugs.
