Print on Demand. This book compiles modern drama criticism and analysis from the last decades of the 19th century on up to 1911. In it you'll find selected reviews, articles, and scholarly essays on the works of such playwrights as Ibsen, Hauptmann, Bernard Shaw, and more. These selections were made by Mrs. Clara (Moulliken) Norton, Frank K. Walter, Fanny Elsie Marquand, and Ruth F. Eliot. The book is split into three parts. Part one deals with the modern drama and its characteristics and part two focuses on the works of Henrik Ibsen. Part three covers the work of Pinero, Henry Arthur Jones, and others. While some of the material will be most interesting to those engaged in academic study of theater or literary criticism, there is much that will prove useful and interesting to fans of the theater and students of the era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

Two new sections, on Henry Arthur Jones and Pinero permit some comparative study of the literary drama of the first edition and the stage play as represented in the work of these two prominent English playwrights. As the original notes on these sections were destroyed in the New York State Library fire credit for their present form is largely due to three members of the class of 1911 of the New York State Library School Mrs. Philip L. Allen and Mr. Sylvester J. Carter, who collected the material on which the present section on Pinero is based, and Miss Ruth F. Eliot who collected that on Henry Arthur Jones.
