The EASIEST way to give your child experience and practice with back-and-forth conversing.
- No setup required. Just start filling in the blanks together.
- Conversation templates provide a framework of support – like training wheels on a bike.
- Only 5-10 minutes to complete one unit!
Uses EFFECTIVE, evidence-based methods.
- Pattern practice has been used in Japan for decades to habitualize language patterns through repetition.
- Variable elements provide fluidity, highlighting how responses affect the flow of conversation.
- Together, these techniques illustrate the basic mechanics of conversation, for learners who lack an intuitive sense of what to say.
It’s FUN !
- Features an off-beat, quirky cast of characters.
- Each character’s distinct personalities are discovered through conversation.
- Employs an uncluttered, pictographic visual style to focus attention.
LANGUAGE STRUCTURES CHOSEN TO FACILITATE:
-
MAKING FRIENDS (daily conversation; commenting, activities, possessions)
-
CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS (thanking, apologizing, asking permission) and
-
SELF-AWARENESS (likes, dislikes, moods).
Model Dialogs combines proven techniques to create a new method, designed to be easy and fun for kids, yet effective as well. The ability to read is helpful but not necessary, as the dialogs are short enough to be memorized. Visual and textual cues offer hints.
By internalizing conversation patterns, a child on the spectrum is provided with solid tools to utilize in their social skills education.

Judson Smith has brilliantly applied the Japanese practice of “English Conversation Schools” to teach conversational skills to autistic children with his remarkable book, “Model Dialogs.” His creative and humorous illustrations will entice all children to learn and engage with these characters. Moreover, this book can easily be used by parents, educators, and intervention providers to enhance the application of foundational social skills to meaningful, everyday interactions. Beneficial for any age.
