Print on Demand. This book delves into the subject of compassion as it has been conceived of and debated throughout the history of philosophical thought. The author, an expert in the field, begins with an examination of the first philosophical inquiries into compassion in the early modern era by figures such as Geulincx and Spinoza. From there, the book moves on to explore the treatment of compassion in the works of the English-Scottish emotionalists, the French moralists, and the German moral philosophers. The author does an excellent job of situating each philosopher's ideas within the broader context of their time and philosophical tradition. He also provides insightful analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each philosopher's arguments. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of ethics or in the nature of compassion itself. It offers a comprehensive overview of the subject and provides new insights into the complex and multifaceted nature of this important human emotion. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
