The result is an exploration of the history of missions, the role of faith in their development, the challenges they've faced, and the impact they've had on the world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

False views are often entertained of the relation of this work to the church. Some regard it as a scheme which has its origin, like that of many worldly enterprises, in the invention Of ambitious minds; sustained by a passion for achievement, and therefore destined to a short existence. Others treat it as the fruit of an enthusiasm, m which there is no fair estimate of the power of Christianity, or Of the power of the church to Spread it; and hav ing no intelligent principle as its basis: a scheme appended to the church, so morally Significant as for a time to arrest attention; but economically unsound, and hence must ere long be a failure.
