Neuware - 'Mission Tales in the Days of the Dons' offers a vivid collection of stories and legends that capture the spirit and romance of early California. Through a series of narrative sketches, A. S. C. Forbes brings to life the era when the Spanish missions were the centers of social and spiritual life along the Pacific coast. The book explores the complex interplay between the Franciscan friars, the Spanish settlers known as the 'Dons,' and the indigenous populations during a foundational period of Western history. These tales range from accounts of religious devotion and sacrifice to descriptions of the vibrant social customs that defined the colonial era. By focusing on the traditions, architecture, and folklore of the mission period, the work preserves a crucial chapter of the American West. Forbes provides readers with an evocative glimpse into the landscape of a bygone age, highlighting the cultural foundations that shaped the Golden State. Whether detailing the founding of specific missions or the personal dramas of those who resided within their adobe walls, this collection serves as both a historical record and a literary tribute to the enduring heritage of California's Spanish past. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
