Print on Demand. This book records a significant speech made by the Honorable C. G. Memminger, as the representative of South Carolina before the Virginia Legislature on the eve of the American Civil War. Memminger’s address contextualizes the disenfranchisement of the South by the North. In doing so, the author directly addresses the motivations and actions of the abolition movement, and the ways in which the North sought to leverage its dominant position to the detriment of the South. The author sets out the history and terms of the Missouri Compromise, alongside the subsequent agreements and compromises made to mollify the tensions between the North and South. The author also chronicles the political events leading to the Harpers Ferry invasion as one of many provocations that fueled the growing resentment leading to the American Civil War. The book elucidates the uncompromising positions taken by both sides, spotlighting the failure of empathy and understanding that precipitated the conflict. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
