We take it for granted that we are subjects moving through an objective world — that what we feel is somehow softer, more private, than what we do. This book argues that the assumption has quietly organized much of what philosophy has said about mind, freedom, and meaning, and that it is wrong in a specific way: subjectivity is not objectivity’s shortfall but its precondition, and it is action that turns the one into the other. The book begins where philosophy of mind usually ends — with the raw fact of subjective experience — and asks why objectivity, not subjectivity, has always been treated as the achievement to be earned, working from Russell and Denbigh through Husserl, Wittgenstein, and the architecture of consciousness itself to show that our very vocabulary for the two already presupposes an answer.
From there the book turns to action’s own history: to Aristotle’s four causes, and to the turn by which modern physics left the question of what an action is for to the humanities; to Augustine, in whose reflections on sin and judgment the will first became answerable for what it does; to the long modern argument — Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Kant — over whether the will is caused, free, or both; and to Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and the existentialists, who broke that argument open by discovering that an action can be its own point rather than a means to anything beyond it. What emerges is a single thread running underneath all of it: action is the missing link between will and representation, the way a will becomes effective in the world and a representation is put to the test. The book then asks what an action means once performed, following that thread into Peirce’s pragmatism and a theory of meaning built against, and beyond, Habermas’s account of communicative action.
It closes by widening the frame from the single actor to the collective and institutional: to what it takes for an intended action to become a performed one; to authority, and what makes power something freely accepted rather than merely imposed; to the entangled ways any action can be read; and to conscience, the place where every standard of the good must pass before it governs anyone’s conduct. Conscience is educated by others, and the book ends with the forces that now educate it: movements of opinion that gather around a conviction until it belongs to no one in particular, and an age in which the old monopolies on certifying whose opinion counts have broken down without yet being replaced. Ambitious in scope and rigorous in argument, this is a book for readers willing to reconsider where the self, and its actions, actually begin.
