Over the years, Europe has seen more than its fair share of conflict, with mighty empires coming and going and strategic alliances ebbing and flowing between nations. Eastern Europe in particular has found itself at the centre of much unwelcome attention. In the early nineteenth Century, Napoleon’s ego caused him to lead his fabled Grande Armée to smash its way through the region to seize Moscow, only for his mighty Empire to crumble just few years later. A century later, Hitler’s ruthless Wehrmacht, with minds filled of hatred and spite from the constant stream of blatant lies from the trailblazing Nazi propaganda machine, unleashed their total, barbaric war, across much of Europe, a war that enveloped not only the combatants, but the entire populations of the nations affected.
Missing in Action is a story, based on true events, set on the Eastern Front during World War II. At a time when the Slavic nations were united as one in a desperate fight against a common aggressor. Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians fought side by side, through one of the most brutal, barbaric and murderous periods of human conflict. The story follows its main character, Valerey Alexandrovich Ermolaev (known to everyone as Valia), through many of the horrific and harrowing experiences that this young, and very ordinary Soviet soldier has to confront during a truly fearful time of remorseless, cruel and savage warfare.
At the onset of Operation Barbarossa, Valia and his battalion are sent to help protect a vital river crossing in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchug. Here, despite the overwhelming odds stacked against them, Valia and his comrades prevent the marauding Nazi invaders from crossing the river for a whole month. However, despite their fierce and heroic resistance, Valia and his surviving comrades are eventually overwhelmed, and forced to surrender. During his captivity, Valia suffers appallingly and witnesses countless truly horrifying events.
One day, he gets a tempting offer that may just save his life. Can he really stay that one step ahead of death? Can he possibly return to the fray and defend his homeland once more?
