Fine condition semi-hard dark blue boards with bright gold spine lettering and gilt upper page edges. VOLUME I: Tome Premier, 572 pages, (1940); VOLUME II: Tome Deuxieme, 551 pages plus a rear section of Nelson publisher advertisements, (1940); VOLUME III: Tome Troisieme, 480 pages (1937); VOLUME IV: Tome Quatrieme, 463 pages plus a rear section of Nelso publisher advertisements entitled Les Collections Nelson (1937). The blank first free front endpaper in volume I is partially cut, albiet neatly, so only about 50% of the page remains. Otherwise, all other pages within each volume are in fine unmarked condition and the spine in each volume is exceedingly tight and square (see photographs). THE TEXT IS IN FRENCH. "Les Miserables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love.".
